CUSSH explores how global systems influence the environmental impact of cities, and the health of people who live in them. We worked with the CUSSH team to deliver a refreshed brand, website, and concept-led art publication that champions all angles of their work.

Branding for impact

CUSSH (Complex Urban Systems for Sustainability and Health) is a UCL-led, Wellcome Trust-funded research project. To make its complex, scientific insights more accessible, we developed a new identity that balances academic rigour with warmth. The new logo, a versatile "C" mark, can layer over any background, becoming part of the scenery without dominating the view. We also introduced a fresh tagline, icon set, and an empathetic colour palette, providing clear guidelines for the team across all touchpoints.

Made for everyone

With such dense, intricate subject matter, the CUSSH site needed to be a warm and welcoming experience. Thoughtful navigation ensures accessibility and clear user journeys for each CUSSH audience group. The website is also radically accessible. Equipped with a lazy load function and a low band-width option, the site works with even the shakiest of wifi connections.

Art that asks questions

The final piece of the CUSSH project was a book exploring art’s role in an age of planetary destruction. Featuring contributions from thirty-two creatives, the book was designed with perforated pages that encourage tearing, reflecting humanity’s destructive impact. Its fragile design and brittle font emphasise the irreversibility of this damage. Only 50 copies were made, one of which is archived at the Wellcome Library, making it a rare, endangered object — just like the planet itself.
